You’re here because you do not want a particular application to access the internet in your windows, right?
In other words, you want to block an application from accessing the internet completely. Here will will go through step by step process, it will not take more than 5 minutes if done carefully.
But before that, what may be the reasons for not allowing an app to connect to the internet.
Why Do We Want to do this?
There may be variety of reason we want due to which we do not want a particular windows application to connect to the internet. Some of them are:
1. The app is completely offline in nature but runs in background and consume data. It might be the feature of the app for checking the latest update or user experience program.
2. To keep our online privacy in check. The app might be spying on us and sell the user’s data to interested companies.
3. In case of premium application, we might want to block an app license manager to stop checking for valid registration key (only for informational purpose).
4. Or, we just are just curious and want a tutorial on how to block any app from accessing the internet with windows firewall.
Here, we are blocking Shareit from accessing the internet with firewall, these steps will follow for any windows application you want. We will create windows firewall rule to achieve this, go through each step carefully.
Creating a Windows Firewall Rule
Step 1. First of all, click on windows logo in the extreme bottom corner of your PC. Search “Windows Firewall with advanced security”. When you type windows firewall, the option will automatically show up.
Step 2. Click it to open “Windows Firewall with advanced options” tab. Here we will see inbound rules and outbound rules options.
Step 3. Now click on “inbound rules“, select ‘new rule‘ option from the right sidebar. From the inbound rule wizard popup, select ‘program’, most of the time, program is already selected.
Step 5. Select the path location by clicking the browse option. In most of the cases, we find an app location path in C Drive -> Program files (x86) or C Drive -> Program Files. As we are blocking Shareit, we will select Shareit.exe from the program file location. Check the screenshot below.
Step 6. In the next window, select “Block the connection” from the three option given. Click Next
Step 7. Then we have to specify for which the rule applies. Select all three and click Next.
Step 8. The last step, we have to name and write description (optional) of the rule. Name it “Shareit block”, leave description space empty. Click Finish.
It took total 8 steps to create and inbound rule in firewall. Now we have to create outbound rule for which we have to select “Outbound rule” in the third step and create new outbound connection.
Then follow the same 4th step to 8th step to create outbound rule.
After creating inbound and outbound rules, no inbound and outbound internet communication can be done by the application in question. Or we can say, Shareit in our PC will not be able to send or receive any kind of data over the internet.
We have done it successfully, we can now apply this method to block any application we want to restrict from connecting to the internet.
